
This October, I'm taking the floating solar conversation to a national audience. I'll be speaking at ASES SOLAR 2026, the American Solar Energy Society's national conference, running October 19 through 21 at the Palmer Events Center in Austin. This year's event is held in partnership with the Texas Solar Energy Society, marking their 50th anniversary, so it's fitting that a Texas-based project is on the agenda.
My topic: floating solar, and specifically, why it belongs inside a closed-loop water and energy system instead of standing alone as a separate solar installation.
What Is ASES SOLAR 2026?
ASES SOLAR is the American Solar Energy Society's flagship national conference, drawing engineers, policymakers, researchers, and developers working across every corner of the solar industry. Held this year under the theme "Solar for All, Y'all," SOLAR 2026 puts Texas at the center of a conversation that's usually dominated by coastal markets, which makes it the right room for a Texas infrastructure story.

Why This Matters Beyond One Conference Talk
Texas is growing faster than its water and energy infrastructure can comfortably absorb, and the two problems are more connected than they're usually treated. Every acre of land committed to solar-only generation is an acre not doing double duty, and every basin or pond losing water to evaporation is losing a resource that a well-placed floating array could help protect. Floating solar sits at exactly that intersection: it's an energy solution and a water-conservation tool wearing the same hardware.
That's the pitch to a room full of people who build, permit, and finance solar and water infrastructure for a living. It's not a hypothetical, it's a design decision available right now to anyone willing to stop treating water infrastructure and power generation as separate disciplines.
